This picture book encourages the reader to think about “difference” through the stories of seven distinct children. Each child’s story is depicted in a certain vivid color, which then come together to form a harmonious whole. It encourages an attitude of acknowledging and celebrating our differences, even if we look and think differently, like different things and are different in skin color—just as the diverse colors exist in harmony.

어느 날 두더지는 눈밭을 걷다 ‘얘야, 고민이 있을 때면 눈덩이를 굴려 보렴’하고 할머니의 말을 떠올리며 눈덩이를 굴리기 시작한다. 두더지의 작은 모습은 풍경과 대비되고, 점점 커지는 눈덩이는 두더지의 고민을 시각화하여 보여준다. 눈 속에서 만난 친구들의 사연을 듣고, 혼자만의 고민이 아니었음을 알게 된다. 그리고 친구들과 소소한 일상을 나누며 자연스럽게 친구가 되는 과정을 보여 준다.

One day, a mole with a lot on his mind starts rolling a snowball, as he recalls the words of his grandmother, saying, “Child, roll a snowball when you are faced with a problem.” The small figure of the mole contrasts with the wide-open landscape, and the ever-growing snowball serves as a visual symbol of the mole’s troubles. Listening to the stories of friends he meets in the snow, he realizes that he is not alone in his troubles. The story describes how the mole gradually makes friends by sharing details of his daily life.

In the first half of this book, the focus is on Yuwon. In the second half, the people surrounding Yuwon are illuminated one by one, the spotlight finally circling back to Yuwon. This narrative structure is effective in revealing the source of Yuwon’s guilt as the sole survivor of a tragic accident 12 years ago. Yuwon’s anguished heart is tautly described, with complex emotions underlying her fear of having to live as a survivor and the shadow of her dead sister’s best friend.

This book vividly depicts the lives of young people suffering the consequences of underage labor, domestic violence, and child abuse of this age. The protagonists of this book cling to each other as they try to escape from a world filled with despair and sorrow, and instead of despairing daily, they choose to fight and shed tears for one another. Instead of being defined by the names the world calls them by, they seek out their own names, carving out beautiful patterns along the way.
