깡통 차기 게임에서는 “술래”를 정한 후에 빈 깡통을 땅바닥에 놓습니다. 깡통 차기 놀이를 할 때마다 수줍음이 많은 어린 소녀 치에(Chie)는 “술래”에게 이미 “잡힌” 애들을 구하기 위해 깡통을 차는 것을 늘 두려워합니다. 이번에는 친구 리에(Rie)와 함께 숨었지만 리에는 깡통을 발로 차러 나갔다가 그만 잡히고 맙니다. 치에는 친구를 구하기 위해 용기를 짜내고 마침내 깡통을 걷어차는 데 성공합니다. 그림책의 그림은 수줍음 많은 어린 소녀의 감정선을 풍부하게 묘사할 뿐만 아니라 그 용감한 행동을 대담하고도 극적인 연출로 잘 보여줍니다.

In the game Kick the Can, one person is designated as “it” and an empty can is placed on the ground. When playing Kick the Can, a shy little girl named Chie is always too afraid to kick the can in order to save those already “caught” by the designated “It” player. This time she hides with her friend Rie, but Rie is caught when she goes out to kick the can. Chie screws up her courage to save her friend and succeeds in kicking it. The illustrations eloquently portray the feelings of the shy little girl and present the action from bold, dramatic angles.

게코도마뱀 야모지로(Yamojiro)와 고슴도치 하리키치(Harikichi)는 어렸을 때부터 친구입니다. 하지만 요즈음 야모지로는 하리키치와 노는 것이 지루하다고 생각합니다. 하리키치는 느리게 움직이고, 나무타기도 서툴고, 또 놀림을 받아도 웃기만 합니다. 야모지로는 지긋지긋해 하며 “너 정말 싫어, 하리키치!”라고 소리지릅니다. 하지만 하리키치는 야모지로가 고양이에게 습격을 당하자 주저하지 않고 재빠르게 도와줍니다. 파충류를 좋아하는 작가는 이 우정 이야기를 게코도마뱀의 관점에서 이끌어 나갑니다. 시각적 구성면에서는 부드러운 장면 전환으로 독자의 시선을 유도하며 이야기를 전개해 나갑니다. 아이들의 일상을 바라보는 작가의 시선은 예리하면서도 따뜻합니다.

A gecko named Yamojiro and a hedgehog named Harikichi have been friends since they were babies. But lately, Yamojiro finds playing with Harikichi boring After all, Harikichi moves slowly, is bad at tree-climbing, and laughs even when teased. Yamojiro gets fed up and yells, “I hate you, Harikichi!” But when Yamojiro is threatened by a cat, Harikichi comes to his aid unhesitatingly. The author, a fan of reptiles, draws this story of friendship from the gecko’s perspective. Skillfull changes in the visual composition guide readers’ eyes, moving the story along. The author’s eye for children’s daily life is sharp and kind.

이 이야기의 주인공은 10살 소녀 랑카(Lank)입니다. 1년 내내 따뜻하고 초록이 가득한 나라에서 일본으로 건너왔습니다. 일본 말도 글도 모르는 채 학교에 다니게 된 아이는 ‘세상에서 혼자’라고 느낍니다. 실내화로 갈아신고, 다른 학우와 똑같은 체육복을 입고, 또 급식을 하는 것이 마냥 낯 설기만 한 랑카는 여러 다른 일본 학교 문화에 당황하며 많이 걱정하고 긴장합니다. 그러던 어느 날 고향을 떠올리며 예전처럼 운동장에 있는 나무에 오르려 하자 같은 반 친구가 위험하다며 랑카의 다리를 잡아당겨 막습니다. 하지만 랑카는 자기를 괴롭혔다고 오해해 울어버립니다. 현재 일본 학교에는 해외에 뿌리를 둔 4만명 이상의 학생들이 있습니다. 일본어를 가르치고 있는 작가는 해외에서 온 전입생뿐만 아니라 이들을 맞이하는 학생 모두가 언어의 장벽을 넘어 관계를 맺는 소중함을 얘기 합니다.

The main character in this story is a 10-year-old girl named Lanka, who has come to Japan from a country that is warm all year round and filled with green. Arriving at a school where she does not understand the language or the writing, she feels “alone in the world.” Unused to changing into indoor shoes, wearing the same gym clothes as others, and serving lunch as a class, she gets confused by the various customs and grows worried and nervous. One day, when recalling her home she tries to climb a tree in the playground as she used to, a classmate pulls her leg to stop her because of the danger. But Lanka mistakes this for bullying and it makes her cry. Schools across Japan now serve more than forty thousand children with roots overseas. The author, who teaches Japanese, conveys the need to connect despite the language barrier—not only for students who arrive from different countries, but also for students who receive them.

“You Are on the Other Side of this River”

Rino from Miyagi prefecture and Ryo from Fukushima prefecture are both survivors of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and both of their families relocated to cities near Tokyo, on opposite sides of the same river. But their experience of the disaster and their reaction to it are quite different. Written from Rino’s perspective, the story depicts how these two are drawn together despite their differences. Rino’s older brother died in the tsunami. Ever since, her mother has suffered from insomnia and her father has buried himself in his work. Rino, who hated being pitied by her classmates in junior high school, decides to enter a senior high school on the other side of the river where no one will know her past.
She joins the brass band club, keeping her background a secret. Ryo belongs to the same club, but he speaks openly about his experience of the disaster. At an all-school brass band competition, Rino runs into some of her classmates from junior high, and Ryo finds out that she is also from the disaster-stricken area. They begin to share their experiences. Rino tells Ryo that she dated her older brother’s friend for a while, but broke up, while Ryo confides that he was bullied in junior high because he was from Fukushima and that his relationship with his girlfriend in Fukushima is rocky. At the end of the year, Rino is able to open up to her band mates. She finds that sharing her past helps her feel more comfortable at school.
The novel explores situations common to many survivors such as the after effects of the tsunami in Miyagi and the dislocation caused by nuclear contamination in Fukushima. Rino and Ryo’s efforts to communicate and bridge the gap give the reader hope. A winner of the Japan Juvenile Literature Association Prize.

초등학교 2학년인 사츠키(Satsuk)는 수다 떨고 뭔가 해내는 것을 좋아합니다. 하지만 같은 반의 토키짱(Toki-chan)은 종종 질문에 빨리 대답하지 못하고, 또 모든 일에 시간을 들여 천천히 합니다. 토키짱 어머니의 부탁을 받은 사츠키는 매일 토키짱과 등교하며 많은 시간을 함께 보냅니다. 하지만 토키짱이 느리게 꾸물거려 불만이 쌓인 사츠키는 더 이상 참고 기다릴 수 없을 때마다 “이건 못되게 구는 것이 아니야”라고 생각해 먼저 가버리곤 합니다. 처음에 사츠키는 토키짱이 이상하다고 생각합니다. 왜냐하면 토키짱은 길가에 줄지어 늘어서 있는 개미의 행렬을 내내 지켜보거나, 또 “나무는 살아있어. 그래서 오늘의 나무는 어제의 나무와는 다른 거야.”라는 말들을 하기 때문입니다. 하지만 사츠키는 곧 토키짱이 시간을 여유롭게 천천히 보내기 때문에 다른 이들이 보고도 느낄 수 없는 삼라만상을 보고 느낀다는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다. 7세 소녀의 솔직한 말로 들려주는 사츠키의 이야기는 사뭇 다른 성격과 행동방식을 가진 누군가와의 교류를 통해 어떻게 변화하고 성장해나가는 지 보여줍니다. 부드러운 느낌의 그림은 마음을 차분하게 진정시킵니다.

Satsuki, a girl in her second year of elementary school, likes to chat and get things done. Her classmate Toki-chan, on the other hand, often cannot answer questions quickly and takes her time with things. At the request of Toki-chan’s mother, Satsuki walks to school with Toki-chan daily and spends lots of time with her. But when Toki-chan moves slowly, Satsuki often grows frustrated, and when Satsuki can’t stand to wait anymore, she sometimes goes ahead, thinking to herself, “Surely this isn’t mean.” At first, Satsuki thinks Toki-chan strange because she can watch a line of ants by the roadside endlessly, and she says things like, “The tree is living, so it’s not the same tree it was yesterday.” But Satsuki eventually comes to see that because Toki-chan takes her time, she sees and feels things that others cannot. Satsuki’s story, which is told in the straightforward words of a seven-year-old, shows how she changes and grows through her friendship with someone who has quite a different personality and way of doing things. The illustrations lend a gentle touch that calms the heart.
