잠들기 전에 책을 읽어 주기로 약속을 한 아빠를 기다리던 한 어린 소녀는 아빠로부터 귀가가 늦어진다는 전화를 받는다. 소녀는 아빠가 지금 어디에 있을지 상상해본다. 아빠가 회사에서 일을 마치는 모습을 시작으로, 기차를 타고 쇼핑 아케이드를 빠져나와 강변 길을 따라 걷는 모습을 떠올린다. 이어서 아빠가 갓파(kappa)와 같은 물 속에 사는 요괴를 만나 쫓기다가 우산을 펼쳐 하늘을 날다가 마침내 공원의 미끄럼틀에 착지하여 집으로 달려오는 모습을 상상한다. 이 그림책은 소녀의 백일몽을 역동적인 구도와 따뜻한 감성으로 표현한다.

Where Is Dad Now?
A little girl’s father has promised to read her a book at bedtime but phones to say he will be late. The girl wonders where he might be now. First, she imagines him finishing his work, then getting onto the train, walking through the shopping arcade and along the river. There, she pictures him running into a kappa or water sprite who chases him. Her father opens his umbrella and floats away, landing on a slide in the park. Then he runs home. In this picture book, the girl’s daydreams are deftly rendered through the dynamic composition and warm touch of the illustrations.

히로시마에 살았던 이발사 스즈키 로쿠로는 제2차 세계대전이 끝나갈 무렵 자신의 가족의 삶을 사진으로 기록했다. 스즈키씨 아내의 미소 짓는 얼굴, 신나게 놀며 함박 웃음 짓는 아이들, 반려견과 반려묘의 천진난만한 행동 등 각 사진은 애정 어린 시선으로 일상 생활을 담아낸다. 안타깝게도 이 가족은 1945년 8월 6일에 히로시마에 투하된 원자폭탄으로 인해 몰살당하고 만다. 이 책의 저자 사시다 카즈는 히로시마평화기념박물관에서 그들의 사진을 처음 본 순간 강하게 이끌렸다. 사시다 작가는 남겨진 사진들과 그 사진들을 보관했던 스즈키 씨의 친척들과의 인터뷰를 통해 스즈키 가족을 되살아나게 한다. 스즈키의 사진들과 일본어와 영어로 이루어진 사시다의 글이 어우러진 이 작품은 독자들에게 삶과 평화와 같은 주제에 대해 고민해보도록 한다.

A Family in Hiroshima ーTheir Vanished Dreams
Rokuro Suzuki, a barber who lived in Hiroshima, recorded the life of his family in photos near the end of World War II. Each photo captured their daily life with a loving touch: the smiling face of Suzuki’s wife, the laughter on his children’s faces as they played, and the innocent antics of their pet cats and dogs. On August 6, 1945, the entire family was wiped out by the atom bomb that fell on Hiroshima. When author Kazu Sashida first saw their photos in the Hiroshima Peace Museum, she was intrigued. Based on the photos and interviews with Suzuki’s relatives who saved the photos, Sashida brings the Suzuki family back to life. Suzuki’s photos and Sashida’s text, which is written in both Japanese and English, inspires readers to ponder such themes as life and peace.

이 사진 그림책은 이와테 현 리쿠젠 타카타에 사는 어부와 손자의 이야기를 담고 있다. 이 도시는 2011년 3월 11일에 일어난 동일본 대지진과 쓰나미로 인해서 크나큰 피해를 입었고 대부분의 어선은 파괴되었다. 이 책의 주인공인 할아버지 어부는 배를 먼 앞바다 가져다 놨었기에 무사했지만 주위의 참상을 목격하고 한동안 바다에 나갈 수가 없었다. 그러던 어느 날 그의 손자가 “할아버지, 할아버지가 잡아주던 흰살 생선이 먹고싶어요”라고 말했다. 그 말을 들은 할아버지는 다시 바다로 나가기로 결심한다. 이 논픽션 그림책은 할아버지 어부가 잡아 온 물고기를 다른 이웃들과 나누면서 활기를 되찾는 항구의 모습을 보여준다.

Still Going Out FishingーRikuzentakata after the Tsunami
This photo picture book shows a fisherman and his grandchild in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture. The town was rocked by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami on March 11, 2011. Nearly all its fishing boats were destroyed. The fisherman in this book survived by taking his boat far offshore, but seeing the suffering, he declined to fish for a long time. One day his grandson said, “I want to eat that white fish you used to catch, Grandpa.” At that sentence, the man decided to return to sea. This nonfiction book shows how he shares his catches, and the port begins coming back to life.

이 책은 한 소년과 그의 할아버지 토쿠지로에 대한 관계를 담아낸다. 고집불통에 귀가 잘 들리지 않는 토쿠지로 씨는 부인이 세상을 떠난 후 혼자 살고 있다. 그에게는 소년의 어머니를 포함한 세 딸이 있다. 하지만 여름에 가족들이 모여도 토쿠지로 씨는 혼자 말없이 TV만 본다.
그런 말 수가 적고 까다로운 할아버지가 소년에게 대나무 헬리콥터를 만들고 숲에서 딱정벌레를 잡는 법을 비롯하여 자연의 경이로움을 가르친다. 소년은 할아버지가 들려주는 이야기들에 매료된다. 간토 대지진이 일어났던 1923년에 태어난 할아버지는 부모조차도 포기한 반항적인 소년이었다. 공부는 못했지만 스포츠에는 뛰어났으며 친구들과 위험한 석전놀이를 하고 남의 밭과 과수원에 숨어 들어가서 토마토니 비파 오렌지 등을 훔치곤 했다. 할아버지는 만약 자신과 친구들이 잡혔더라면 낭패를 당했을 거라고 소년에게 이야기한다.
소년이 몹시도 좋아하는 이 고집 센 노인의 삶은 심장마비 이후 서서히 죽어가는 모습까지 소년의 시각에서 생생하고 풍성하게 그려진다. 할아버지의 어린 시절과 삶의 방식은 가족의 역사와 겹쳐지며 소년의 현재 삶과 연결된다. 토쿠지로 씨의 독특한 삶에 대한 접근 방식은 그의 손자와의 상호작용, 전쟁 중 경험 그리고 심장마비 이후 가족의 간호를 통해 꼼꼼하게 묘사된다. 할아버지의 기억 하나 하나는 소년의 삶을 풍요롭게 하는 소중한 선물이 된다.

Tokujiro and I
The story follows the relationship of a boy and his grandfather, Tokujiro. Stubborn and cantankerous Tokujiro is a widower who lives alone and is hard of hearing. He has three daughters including the boy’s mother but when they and their families come to visit during the summer, Tokujiro just sits silently in front of the TV.
Yet this same taciturn and difficult old man teaches the boy how to make bamboo-copters, takes him beetle hunting in the woods, and teaches him the wonders of nature. The boy is fascinated by his grandfather’s stories. Born in 1923, the year of the Great Kanto Earthquake, his grandfather was a rebellious boy of whom even his parents despaired. Although a poor student, he excelled at sports. He and his friends had dangerous stone-throwing fights and snuck into other people’s fields and orchards to steal tomatoes, loquats and oranges. If they had been caught, they would have met a horrible fate, Tokujiro tells the boy.
The life of this stubborn old man whom the boy loves dearly is vividly and richly portrayed from the boy’s perspective, including the old man’s gradual demise after a heart attack. The man’s boyhood and way of living overlap with the family’s history, linking with the boy’s present life. Tokujiro’s unique approach to living is scrupulously portrayed through his interactions with his grandson, his experiences during the war, and the family’s response to nursing him after his heart attack. Each memory of Tokujiro is a precious gift that enriches the boy’s life.

할머니를 따라 할머니의 사촌네 집으로 가면 언제나 귀한 손님 대접을 받았다. 하지만 그 곳에는 함께 놀 또래가 없어 나는 서둘러 이모네 집으로 갔고, 집에 돌아갈 시간이 되면 이모부는 집에 있는 좋은 물건을 다 내주시곤 했다. 그때 나는 깨달었다. 어린아이가 아름다움을 알고 그 안에서 살아가지만 그 것을 표현할 수 있는 능력이 없다는 것을. 결국 그러한 기억들은 차곡차곡 쌓이기만 했는데 이후에 진정한 시와 노래가 되었다. 시와 노래를 쓸 줄 아는 사람은 커서 어린 시절을 더 잘 추억할 수 있다.
아동문학으로 유명한 메이 지한 작가는 가족애의 아름다움과 따스함을 묘사하고 떠오르는 신예 그림 작가 왕 샤오샤오는 그 글을 단순하지만 신선하게 그려내어 독자의 경험을 한층 더 즐겁게 한다.

When I go with my grandmother to her cousin’s, I am always treated as an honoured guest; However, there is no children to play with me there, so I hurry off to my aunt’s. When it is time to leave, the uncle takes out and gives us all the good things in his house. Only then do I come to understand: a child knows and lives in beauty, but has no ability to describe. Therefore, the result can only be simply piled up to become a real poem and song later. A man who can write poems and songs can smell his childhood better when he grows up.
Mei Zihan, a famous writer of children’s literature, describes the beauty and warmth of family affection for children with her beautiful and warm pen. And Wang Xiaociao, the new generation of painting author, makes the children’s reading experience pleasantly upgraded by using fresh, simple and infectious painting.
